Cathay Pacific is one of Asia’s premier legacy carriers, renowned for recruiting pilots from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds worldwide to operate its Hong Kong-based wide-body fleet of Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 long-range aircraft.
Unlike many leading wide-body carriers, Cathay does not require any jet experience for the Direct Entry Second Officer Program, but maintains a highly structured and competitive multi-stage pilot assessment process. The selection normally takes place over two to three days in Hong Kong SAR and includes simulator profile evaluations, technical examinations, group exercises, and HR interviews. The simulator assessment follows a specific profile and performance standard that can be challenging to pass without targeted, airline-specific preparation.
At Aerocadet, we offer a comprehensive Cathay Pacific Assessment Preparation Program tailored to the airline’s current evaluation format. The program features realistic simulator profile practice, technical review sessions aligned with Cathay’s knowledge standards, and structured interview coaching. Our objective is to help experienced pilots attend the assessment fully prepared, confident, and familiar with the exact performance benchmarks expected by the airline.
Cathay Pacific offers a clear and structured career path for its pilots, (very similar to Singapore Airlines) progressing from Second Officer to First Officer and finally to Captain. The speed of progression depends on individual performance, seniority number, and fleet expansion.
Second Officer (Entry Level) Most new pilots begin their career at Cathay Pacific as a Second Officer. In this role they primarily operate on long-haul and ultra-long-haul flights, acting as a relief pilot and handling cruise sectors while the Captain and First Officer manage takeoffs and landings. Pilots typically spend 3 to 6 years in this rank. The target annual salary is approximately HKD 607,800 plus a monthly allowance starting from HKD 14,000. Benefits at this level include 21 days of annual leave, full medical coverage for the pilot and dependents, loss of licence and life insurance, generous travel concessions for the entire family (including parents and in-laws), a global children’s education allowance of up to 90%, a 15.5% company pension contribution, performance bonuses, and profit share. The effective tax rate in Hong Kong remains low at around 15%.
First Officer (Junior and Senior) After gaining sufficient experience, Second Officers upgrade to First Officer. In this position pilots become fully qualified co-pilots responsible for takeoffs, landings, and cruise duties across Cathay’s entire fleet, including the A321neo, A330, A350, and B777. The upgrade from Second Officer to First Officer usually takes 4 to 7 years. Target annual salary rises to HKD 932,000, with total earnings often reaching HKD 1.4M to 1.9M when productivity pay is included. The monthly allowance starts from HKD 20,000 and increases with seniority. Benefits improve noticeably: annual leave increases to 28–42 days, bidding power for preferred routes and schedules becomes stronger, and all previous benefits continue at a higher level.
Captain (and Senior Captain) The final stage is promotion to Captain, where the pilot becomes the aircraft commander with full responsibility for the flight, crew, and safety. Senior Captains may also take on additional roles such as Training Captain or Examiner. Time to reach command is typically 15 to 25 years from the date of joining, although this can vary significantly with fleet growth. Entry-level Captains earn a target annual salary between HKD 1.8M and 2.4M, while Senior and long-haul Captains commonly reach HKD 2.5M to 3.8M+ with all allowances and productivity. Monthly allowances range from HKD 28,000 to 36,000+. At this level pilots enjoy the highest leave entitlement, maximum bidding priority, and the highest overall earnings potential.
Regardless of rank, all Cathay Pacific pilots receive excellent family travel concessions, comprehensive medical and dental coverage, strong loss-of-licence protection, a generous children’s education allowance, company pension contributions, performance and profit-share bonuses, and access to world-class recurrent training. The airline’s long-haul roster also supports a relatively good work-life balance.

Our Cathay Pathway prep program provides Aerocadet candidates with thorough, multi-session preparation course to ensure that they pass the B777 or A330 simulator assessment, technical interviews and HR panel interviews.

More details about the program and its phases:
Enrollment process is done 100% online, via Aerocadet website and Cathay Pacific employment application portal. Pilots need to fill out the enrollment form located here first, and select "Cathay Pacific Pathway Program" from the selected options. Pilots will need to upload their passport, licenses, proof of funding, and fill out flight time declaration form. After this pilots are advised to (1) register and (2) fill out the Cathay Pacific Second Officer vacancy application form via Cathay job application portal located here.
Candidates submit an online application will be uploading a detailed CV, logbook summary, licence copies, and flight hours. Minimum requirements usually include a valid CPL/IR, ATPL theory passes (or equivalent), ICAO English Level 4+, and relevant total time (often 250+ hours, with preference for 1500 hours of total flight time and a full, unrestricted ATPL). Applications are screened for basic eligibility before any invitation is issued.
Shortlisted candidates are invited to a 25–30 minute video interview (usually via Microsoft Teams) with an HR representative. This stage is non-technical and relaxed. Typical questions focus on:
Interviewers are described as friendly and polite. No heavy technical probing occurs here. Feedback or progression to the next stage usually comes within days to a few weeks.
You can also expect to complete an online psychological/personality assessments and basic aptitude tests either before or after the video interview (see Raven progressive matrices tests)
Successful candidates from the online stages receive an invitation to attend the full assessment at Cathay Pacific City in Hong Kong (usually 2–3 days). Travel and accommodation are typically arranged or reimbursed by the airline. The assessment date is often scheduled 2–4 weeks after the online interview. Approximately 7–14 days before arrival, candidates receive the simulator profile briefing and are told which aircraft type the sim will be on (commonly A330, B777-300ER, or similar wide-body).
Cathay Pacific conducts its pilot assessments using full-flight Level D simulators located at their Flight Training Centre in Cathay Pacific City, Hong Kong. The simulator type is not fixed. The airline usually assigns the specific aircraft type approximately seven days before the assessment date, although this can sometimes be up to two weeks in advance. According to recent candidate reports from 2024–2026, the most commonly used simulators are the Airbus A330 and the Boeing 777-300ER. The Airbus A350 is used occasionally, while the Boeing 747 is now rare and has largely been discontinued for recruitment assessments.
Candidates receive a detailed simulator profile briefing in advance, usually in the form of a PDF that outlines the exact sequence of manoeuvres, expected performance standards, and required callouts. During the assessment, the session is flown as Pilot Flying only, with no Pilot Monitoring present. To test raw flying skills and procedural knowledge, normal cockpit sounds, EGPWS, TCAS, and standard company callouts are often turned off. The profile typically consists of a standard IFR circuit that includes takeoff, climb, radar vectors, ILS approach, go-around, engine failure or fire handling, and landing — all performed to very tight tolerances.
Recommendation: As soon as you receive your assigned aircraft type, immediately notify us to arrange practice sessions on that exact simulator profile in a qualified A330 or B777 full-flight simulator - we use instructors who are familiar with Cathay Pacific’s profiles and standards. The targeted preparation is the single most important factor in passing the simulator assessment!
The B777/A330 assessment preparation for Cathay will be conducted by instructors familiar with Cathay's profile and standards, and will include the following prep hours:
• 4 hours PF (Pilot Flying) per student
• Additional experience in PM (Pilot Monitoring) role during paired crew operations
• Total practical exposure: 8 hours per student (PF + PM)
• Profiles modeled on airline selection assessments, including Cathay-style scenarios
• Includes typical airline entry-level procedures: airport profiles, approaches, go-arounds,
area maneuvers, and general handling
• Detailed methodology, techniques, and program structure remain FAIR’s proprietary
know-how.
The simulator assessment shares several common elements whether the candidate is assigned the Airbus A330 or the Boeing 777. Candidates are expected to follow standard Cathay Pacific company procedures and callouts, which are provided in the briefing pack. There is a strong emphasis on precise flying, accurate altitude, heading, and speed control, as well as smooth aircraft handling. The airline maintains very high standards: pilots must remain on the centerline during takeoff and landing, fly exact assigned altitudes and tracks, and deliver stable ILS approaches. On the Boeing 777, there are no auto-trim reminders, so manual trimming is required throughout. An engine failure or fire is usually briefed or introduced during the session. Overall, the assessment evaluates adaptability, airmanship, CRM, workload management, and fundamental instrument flying skills.
The Airbus A330 profile is currently the most frequently used for recruitment. It typically begins with a standard takeoff, sometimes with a crosswind. This is followed by a climb straight ahead to an assigned altitude, level-off, and aircraft clean-up. The profile then includes radar vectors and heading changes, followed by a precisely flown downwind leg where altitude and track must be maintained accurately. After the base leg turn, candidates perform an ILS approach, either raw data or with guidance, followed by a go-around that often includes an engine failure at or shortly after initiation. The session continues with engine failure or fire handling and concludes with a visual circuit or a second approach to landing.
Key challenges on the A330 centre around its fly-by-wire characteristics, particularly if normal law reverts to alternate law during a failure. Pilots must demonstrate precise speed and altitude control on the downwind and base legs, along with smooth management of speedbrakes and flap selections.
The Boeing 777 profile follows a similar overall structure but is adapted to Boeing operating philosophy. It often starts with an engine failure at or shortly after V1, followed by climb, level-offs, and radar vectors. The downwind and base legs require strict track and altitude tracking. Candidates then fly an ILS approach, a go-around, engine failure or fire handling, and finish with a manual landing that may include additional failures.
On the B777, the main challenges include manual trimming throughout the flight (there is no auto-trim like on the Airbus), the heavier feel of Boeing flight characteristics compared to Airbus types, and the need for strict raw data flying and procedural accuracy. Instructors may also simulate Pilot Monitoring mistakes to test the candidate’s monitoring skills and CRM.
Recent candidates from 2024–2025 strongly recommend practising the exact profile provided in the briefing using a real full-flight A330 or B777 simulator. Focus heavily on precision — staying within ±100 feet, ±5 degrees of heading, and ±5 knots of speed. Use standard calls clearly and assertively, and remain calm throughout. Instructors are generally described as professional and supportive. If you have Airbus experience but are assigned the B777 (or vice versa), always fly according to the aircraft type’s philosophy, for example, trimming manually on the Boeing.
Although the profile itself is deliberately straightforward, it demands very tight tolerances and solid CRM. Most candidates who complete two to three proper practice sessions in the correct simulator type successfully pass this stage.
The assessment evaluates airmanship, handling of the specific aircraft type (especially fly-by-wire characteristics on Boeing types), workload management, and ability to apply standard operating procedures under pressure.
The panel consists of a Captain (technical) and an HR representative (behavioural). The interview lasts around 45–60 minutes and is split roughly 50/50 between technical and HR questions. It tests how candidates handle pressure and apply knowledge in unfamiliar scenarios.
Common topics:
Simultaneously or on the same day, a licence and documentation review takes place. Candidates must bring original logbooks, licences, passports, and medical certificates for verification.
This is conducted as part of the final assessment (sometimes on Day 2 or 3). It is a standard ICAO Level 4+ test focusing on aviation English in operational scenarios. Most experienced pilots pass if their spoken English is already at a professional standard, but it is formally assessed here.
A comprehensive Class 1 medical (including blood, urine, and hair tests in some reports) is arranged in Hong Kong, usually after the interview/sim stages or as the last hurdle. It is conducted at an approved facility and must meet Cathay’s strict standards.
Please review - its important!
While we will make every effort to support your success throughout the Second Officer or First Officer application and selection process with Cathay Pacific, it is important to understand that final selection cannot be guaranteed. Your performance during the official assessment in Hong Kong — particularly in the Airbus A330 or Boeing 777 full-flight simulator — as well as your results in the technical evaluations, panel interview, and aptitude assessments, will play a critical role in the airline’s decision.
Cathay Pacific will also closely evaluate your progress and performance during the initial type rating, ground school, simulator training, and final line check. If your performance falls below the airline’s required standards at any stage, Cathay Pacific reserves the right to withdraw the Conditional Job Offer.
To give you the best possible chance of success, our Cathay Pacific assessment preparation is delivered through Aerocadet’s specialist training partners. This dedicated program provides high-quality, airline-specific training carefully tailored to Cathay Pacific’s current simulator profiles, procedures, and evaluation standards.
If you do not hold a pilot license, Aerocadet provides integrated flight training programs with internship
Aerocadet offers fully comprehensive flight training programs across the United States, Canada, and Europe, designed to equip future pilots with the skills, qualifications, and career pathways needed for long-term success in the aviation industry. Each program features high-quality flight instruction and rigorous academic coursework under the oversight of some of the world’s most respected and safety-focused aviation authorities, including the FAA, TCCA, and EASA. Graduates receive highly desirable Commercial Pilot Licenses and Flight Instructor Certificates, ensuring they are well-positioned for employment in competitive airline environments.
Cathay Pacific, like most major airlines, publishes both minimum and preferred requirements for pilot positions. While the official minimum requirements are relatively accessible — an ICAO Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR), passes in ATPL theory exams from the same licensing authority, and a minimum of 250 hours total flight time — the preferred qualifications are what will make you a truly competitive candidate and significantly increase your chances of being selected.
In practice, successful applicants typically hold a full ICAO ATPL (or CPL with unrestricted ATPL theory credits) issued by a reputable aviation authority from a developed country with strong oversight and minimal issues of corruption in the training industry. They also bring at least 1,000–1,500 hours of total flight time, ideally gained through structured instructor or charter/multi-crew operations, along with excellent references from previous employers.
This is why Aerocadet integrates guaranteed flight instructor internship and hour-building up to 1500 hours with all our pro-pilot programs!
For applicants specifically interested in pursuing Cathay Pacific Second Officer career pathway, we highly recommend enrolling in Aerocadet’s ab-initio flight training program in the United Sattes or European Union, conducted under FAA or EASA certification. EASA is especially recommended, because EASA ATPL theoretical exams closely mirror those of Hong Kong ATPL, allowing for a smooth and efficient license transition process—making it the ideal foundation for future employment with Cathay.
