This makes it virtually impossible for student pilots to jump-seat on U.S. or Canadian airline flights.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1440\" data-end=\"1478\"><strong>Europe, however, operates differently.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1480\" data-end=\"1839\">Within the Schengen Zone\u2014a group of 29 European countries that have abolished passport control at their mutual borders\u2014security policies are generally more flexible. As a result,<a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\"> EASA student pilots<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">private pilot license (PPL) holders studying within the EU<\/a> can often request cockpit access on commercial flights operated within Schengen airspace.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1841\" data-end=\"1871\">How to Request a Jump Seat<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1997\">Here\u2019s how you can request a jump-seat experience in an Airbus A320 cockpit (or other airliners) while flying within the EU:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"3095\">\n<li data-start=\"1999\" data-end=\"2109\">\n<p data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2109\"><strong data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2032\">Buy a valid airline ticket<\/strong><br data-start=\"2032\" data-end=\"2035\" \/>You must be a fare-paying passenger traveling within the Schengen Zone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2111\" data-end=\"2224\">\n<p data-start=\"2114\" data-end=\"2224\"><strong data-start=\"2114\" data-end=\"2140\">Bring your credentials<\/strong><br data-start=\"2140\" data-end=\"2143\" \/>Carry your <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">student pilot ID<\/a>, and if you have already earned it, your <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">ICAO PPL or CPL license<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2226\" data-end=\"2495\">\n<p data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2291\"><strong data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2253\">Dress professionally<\/strong><br data-start=\"2253\" data-end=\"2256\" \/>Wear <em data-start=\"2264\" data-end=\"2281\">business casual<\/em> attire.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2295\" data-end=\"2495\">\n<li data-start=\"2295\" data-end=\"2361\">\n<p data-start=\"2297\" data-end=\"2361\">Acceptable: khakis or dress pants, dress shoes or low boots, a polo shirt or pilot shirt<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2495\">\n<p data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2495\">Not acceptable: jeans, T-shirts, or sneakers. Wear your pilot ID on a lanyard and look clean, presentable, well-groomed and professional. In other words &#8211; look like a part of the team &#8211; the airline pilot team!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2497\" data-end=\"2745\">\n<p data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2745\"><strong data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2530\">Request access at the gate<\/strong><br data-start=\"2530\" data-end=\"2533\" \/>Politely ask the gate agent if they can check with the Captain about a possible cockpit jump seat for observation. The agent will usually take photos of your credentials and pass them along to the flight deck.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2747\" data-end=\"3095\">\n<p data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"3095\"><strong data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"2786\">Respect the Captain\u2019s discretion<\/strong><br data-start=\"2786\" data-end=\"2789\" \/>The final decision always rests with the Captain. However, many pilots for Schengen-based carriers such as Lufthansa, Air France, Wizz Air (and many more), and others are often receptive to student pilots requesting jump-seat access\u2014especially if you look professional and show genuine interest in learning.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 data-start=\"3097\" data-end=\"3141\">Tips for Your First Jump-Seat Experience<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3143\" data-end=\"3420\">\n<li data-start=\"3143\" data-end=\"3205\">\n<p data-start=\"3145\" data-end=\"3205\">Be respectful and quiet on the flight deck unless spoken to. Do not ask pilots any questions until you are outside of the critical operations or &#8220;sterile cockpit&#8221;, which is normally all operations below 10,000 feet. And that incudes the pushback and taxi.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3206\" data-end=\"3276\">\n<p data-start=\"3208\" data-end=\"3276\">Don\u2019t take photos or videos unless explicitly permitted by the crew. Preferably, turn your mobile devises off, or, at least, silence them.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3277\" data-end=\"3343\">\n<p data-start=\"3279\" data-end=\"3343\">Take mental notes of procedures, checklists, and communications. Airbus cockpit normally has spare headsets for the observers. Politely request to wear one. (by the way, your 2-pin GA headset will not work &#8211; Airbus uses a completely different plug, so don&#8217;t try to set it up).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3344\" data-end=\"3420\">\n<p data-start=\"3346\" data-end=\"3420\">Once you arrived, do not open the flight deck door without permission. Wait for the Captain to clear you.
