Format"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"463\" data-end=\"849\">Many international aviation students from the U.K. who have reviewed our <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">EASA ATP program<\/a> and realized that it offers better career prospects and much lower cost of training, are asking us how to convert CAA (UK) PPL and other licenses to the EASA format. So, here is a short article discussing these questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"463\" data-end=\"849\">First of all, since Brexit, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have operated as <em>completely separate<\/em> aviation regulatory bodies. Pilots who once held licenses valid across Europe now face a split regulatory framework, making conversion between UK CAA and EASA licenses essential for those seeking flight privileges in both jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"918\">The need to convert a UK-issued license to an EASA one arises from such considerations as employment search in an EU-based airline or AOC holder, pursuit of training or instruction roles within the EU, maintaining career flexibility across both the UK and EU, regulatory compliance for license renewal, revalidation, or upgrades, and so on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1561\">Prior to January 1, 2021, the UK was a member of EASA, and license holders issued by the UK CAA had full rights to operate across all EASA member states. Following the UK\u2019s departure from the EU, the UK formally ceased to participate in EASA, making its licenses \u201cthird-country\u201d certificates from the perspective of EASA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1563\" data-end=\"1581\">This change means that the UK licenses are no longer automatically recognized in EASA member states, pilots must go through a conversion or validation process to obtain equivalent EASA privileges. (This conversion process is governed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easa.europa.eu\/en\/document-library\/regulations\/commission-regulation-eu-no-11782011\">Annex I to Regulation EU No 1178\/2011<\/a>, particularly the Appendix 3 provisions on third-country license conversion).<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1935\" data-end=\"1979\"><strong data-start=\"1938\" data-end=\"1979\">Converting UK CAA PPL to EASA PPL<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1998\" data-end=\"2157\">The UK CAA PPL is an ICAO-compliant private pilot license. However, converting it to an <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">EASA PPL<\/a> now requires a formal process due to its third-country status.<\/p>\n<h5 data-start=\"2159\" data-end=\"2190\"><strong data-start=\"2163\" data-end=\"2190\">Conversion Requirements:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2497\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2265\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2193\" data-end=\"2265\"><strong data-start=\"2193\" data-end=\"2234\">Pass all 9 EASA PPL theoretical exams<\/strong> (no credits from UK CAA exams)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2266\" data-end=\"2323\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2268\" data-end=\"2323\"><strong data-start=\"2268\" data-end=\"2291\">EASA PPL skill test<\/strong> with an EASA-certified examiner<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2324\" data-end=\"2380\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2326\" data-end=\"2380\"><strong data-start=\"2326\" data-end=\"2380\">Hold or obtain an EASA Class 2 medical certificate<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2434\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2383\" data-end=\"2434\"><strong data-start=\"2383\" data-end=\"2434\">Provide verification of UK license from the CAA<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2435\" data-end=\"2497\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2437\" data-end=\"2497\"><strong data-start=\"2437\" data-end=\"2497\">Demonstrate ICAO English Language Proficiency (Level 4+)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2499\" data-end=\"2617\">Some EASA member states may require a minimum number of dual instruction hours before the skill test can be taken.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2624\" data-end=\"2686\"><strong data-start=\"2627\" data-end=\"2686\">Converting CAA Instrument Rating (IR) to EASA IR<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2705\" data-end=\"2868\">The UK CAA IR (whether as part of CPL\/ATPL or standalone) no longer carries over into <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">EASA privileges<\/a>. Pilots must now convert their UK IR under specific criteria.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2870\" data-end=\"2896\"><strong data-start=\"2874\" data-end=\"2896\">Conversion Pathway<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2897\" data-end=\"2979\">Depending on whether the UK IR is current and valid, the typical process includes:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2981\" data-end=\"3355\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2981\" data-end=\"3100\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3100\"><strong data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3009\">EASA ATPL theory exams<\/strong>: At a minimum, <strong data-start=\"3025\" data-end=\"3053\">EASA IR (A) theory exams<\/strong> must be passed, often through an approved ATO.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3101\" data-end=\"3196\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3196\"><strong data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3122\">Skill Test (IR)<\/strong>: Conducted by an EASA-approved examiner in accordance with EASA Part-FCL.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3197\" data-end=\"3283\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3199\" data-end=\"3283\"><strong data-start=\"3199\" data-end=\"3233\">Minimum flying hours under IFR<\/strong>: Must meet EASA Part-FCL experience requirements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3284\" data-end=\"3355\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3286\" data-end=\"3355\"><strong data-start=\"3286\" data-end=\"3310\">License verification<\/strong>: Directly from UK CAA to the EASA authority.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3357\" data-end=\"3518\">For holders of a <strong data-start=\"3374\" data-end=\"3386\">UK CB-IR<\/strong> (Competency-Based Instrument Rating), similar processes apply, but with some flexibility on training hours depending on experience.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3525\" data-end=\"3589\"><strong data-start=\"3528\" data-end=\"3589\">Converting CAA ATPL (Frozen) to EASA ATPL (Frozen)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3622\" data-end=\"3673\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">\u201cFrozen\u201d ATPL<\/a> refers to a license holder who has Passed all ATPL theoretical knowledge exams, Holds a CPL with Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR) but has not yet met the minimum flight experience (1,500 hours) required to unfreeze the ATPL. So, the frozen ATPL is <em>functionally equivalent<\/em> to a CPL + MEIR, but with all theoretical credits required to upgrade to a full ATPL.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"4017\" data-end=\"4061\"><strong data-start=\"4021\" data-end=\"4061\">Current EASA Conversion Requirements<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4063\" data-end=\"4194\">If a pilot holds a UK CAA Frozen ATPL and seeks to obtain an EASA Frozen ATPL, the conversion will generally involve the following:<\/p>\n<h5 data-start=\"4196\" data-end=\"4229\"><strong data-start=\"4201\" data-end=\"4229\">1. Theoretical Knowledge<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul data-start=\"4230\" data-end=\"4373\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4230\" data-end=\"4292\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4232\" data-end=\"4292\"><strong data-start=\"4232\" data-end=\"4245\">No credit<\/strong> is given for UK ATPL theory exams post-Brexit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4293\" data-end=\"4373\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4295\" data-end=\"4373\">You must <strong data-start=\"4304\" data-end=\"4347\">retake all 13\/14 EASA ATPL theory exams<\/strong> via an EASA-approved ATO.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 data-start=\"4375\" data-end=\"4415\"><strong data-start=\"4380\" data-end=\"4415\">2. Flight Training &amp; Experience<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul data-start=\"4416\" data-end=\"4565\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4416\" data-end=\"4489\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4418\" data-end=\"4489\">Logbook evidence of flight experience meeting EASA CPL + MEIR minimums.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4490\" data-end=\"4565\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4492\" data-end=\"4565\">Flight time from the UK license may still be credited for these minimums.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 data-start=\"4567\" data-end=\"4591\"><strong data-start=\"4572\" data-end=\"4591\">3. Flight Tests<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul data-start=\"4592\" data-end=\"4671\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4592\" data-end=\"4617\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4594\" data-end=\"4617\"><strong data-start=\"4594\" data-end=\"4617\">EASA CPL Skill Test<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4618\" data-end=\"4671\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4620\" data-end=\"4671\"><strong data-start=\"4620\" data-end=\"4671\">EASA IR Skill Test (if not separately endorsed)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 data-start=\"4673\" data-end=\"4713\"><strong data-start=\"4678\" data-end=\"4713\">4. English Language Proficiency<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul data-start=\"4714\" data-end=\"4769\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4714\" data-end=\"4769\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4716\" data-end=\"4769\">ICAO Level 4 or higher, endorsed by an EASA examiner.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 data-start=\"4771\" data-end=\"4804\"><strong data-start=\"4776\" data-end=\"4804\">5. Medical Certification<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul data-start=\"4805\" data-end=\"4871\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4805\" data-end=\"4871\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4807\" data-end=\"4871\"><strong data-start=\"4807\" data-end=\"4843\">EASA Class 1 Medical Certificate<\/strong> required prior to issuance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 data-start=\"4873\" data-end=\"4905\"><strong data-start=\"4878\" data-end=\"4905\">6. License Verification<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul data-start=\"4906\" data-end=\"5001\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4906\" data-end=\"5001\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4908\" data-end=\"5001\">A formal letter from the UK CAA confirming the validity of your current licenses and ratings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"5008\" data-end=\"5052\"><strong data-start=\"5011\" data-end=\"5052\">Frozen to Full ATPL (CAA and EASA)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5234\" data-end=\"5278\">Upgrading your Frozen ATPL to the full one is not a passive process, and it doesn&#8217;t happen automatically with gaining of the required aeronautical experience. If you\u2019ve met all of the following <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">EASA ATPL<\/a> unrestricted requirements, and submitted the proof of this to your local EASA-member aviation authority, your ATPL will become unrestricted. You will need to log:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5232\" data-end=\"5559\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul data-start=\"5281\" data-end=\"5417\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5281\" data-end=\"5311\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5283\" data-end=\"5311\"><strong data-start=\"5283\" data-end=\"5311\">1,500 total flight hours<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5314\" data-end=\"5366\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5316\" data-end=\"5366\"><strong data-start=\"5316\" data-end=\"5350\">500 hours multi-pilot aircraft<\/strong> (or equivalent)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5369\" data-end=\"5417\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5417\"><strong data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5417\">100 hours night, 75 hours instrument, etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5369\" data-end=\"5417\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5417\">You submit documentation to the competent EASA authority<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5477\" data-end=\"5559\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5479\" data-end=\"5559\">License is upgraded from ATPL Frozen to <strong data-start=\"5511\" data-end=\"5528\">full ATPL (A)<\/strong> with all associated privileges.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5561\" data-end=\"5772\">Note: The process of &#8220;unfreezing&#8221; the ATPL is only possible within the issuing regulatory system. So if you hold a UK Frozen ATPL, you must convert it to EASA first before &#8220;unfreezing&#8221; it under EASA. If the license is &#8220;unfrozen&#8221; means that pilot can now act as PIC in the EASA airline operations. In other words, he can upgrade from First Officer to Captain.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"5779\" data-end=\"5826\"><strong data-start=\"5782\" data-end=\"5826\">Beware of European non-EASA Countries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5828\" data-end=\"5991\">As we mentioned previously, some countries that are located in Europe, and even on the EU may not be members of EASA. Here is the list of such countries:<\/p>\n<h5 data-start=\"5828\" data-end=\"5991\">E.U. Members, not in the EASA:<\/h5>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"244\" data-end=\"583\"><strong data-start=\"244\" data-end=\"254\">Cyprus<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"259\" data-end=\"268\">Malta<\/strong> are EU members that have opted to retain their own national aviation safety oversight instead of delegating regulatory authority to EASA. This means pilots licensed by the Cyprus DCA or Transport Malta Civil Aviation Directorate are regulated under those authorities, even though they&#8217;re within the EU. These countries still recognize EASA licenses and work within the general EU aviation framework, but they issue and manage licenses independently of EASA.<span style=\"font-size: 1.2em; font-weight: bold;\">EU Members, but not\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 data-start=\"244\" data-end=\"583\">European Countries, not in the E.U. and not in the EASA<\/h5>\n<p>Countries that are geographically in Europe but are not members of either the EU or EASA include: <strong data-start=\"102\" data-end=\"259\">Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, Moldova, North Macedonia, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan<\/strong>. These nations operate their own civil aviation authorities and regulatory frameworks outside the jurisdiction of EASA and the European Union.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6261\" data-end=\"6321\"><strong data-start=\"6264\" data-end=\"6321\">Plan Strategically for Career Flexibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6323\" data-end=\"6477\">If an international, non-EU student pilot\u2014for example, from India\u2014wants to pursue a professional aviation career in Europe, it is crucial that they complete their training in an EASA member state. Doing so ensures their license is issued by an <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">EASA authority<\/a>, which provides maximum flexibility for employment opportunities across all EASA member countries. Training in the UK, while high quality, results in a UK CAA license, which is no longer part of EASA since Brexit. This severely limits job prospects to the UK alone, and even then, only if the student is able to secure a work visa\u2014something notoriously difficult for new graduates. This is precisely why <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocadet.com\/atpl-eu.html\">our EASA ATPL program is conducted in Romania<\/a>, a full EU and EASA member state.
